A panel, or sidebar, is found on either the right side (default) or the left side of the Windows desktop in the Windows Vista operating system. Gadgets can be placed on this sidebar, and they are automatically aligned on it. Gadgets can also be placed elsewhere on the screen, which generally causes them to expand and display more information. In Windows 7, the sidebar is removed, although gadgets can somewhat similarly be aligned on any side of the screen. Gadgets are toggled between the two sizes via a button in Windows 7.

Today's world of technology has allowed everyone the ability to personalize just about anything they want. A computer, in it's first years of being in nearly every household, provided people with the ability to gain access to the world through the Internet. The only personalization a person had was the ability to change their background and screen savers. At this time, it was one of the best ways to make one's computer seem very unique and special. Now, a person's computer can be their place of amazing artwork and designs for their background, vibrant screen savers, and gadgets that help add the finishing touches to completely personalizing one's computer.
Before today's existence of Windows 7, computers had very limited capabilities of personalization options. The most that people could do was change their backgrounds into already stored pictures. These pictures ranged from company logos who created the computer, generic Windows background, and around four pictures of different natural landscapes. There later became the option to download pictures and different Windows themes online. By simply clicking on a picture of their interest, they could easily change their background into that picture. The trick, as people later came to find out, was making sure that the screen resolution numbers were appropriately matched to that of their computers, because if not, the picture would be depixelated across their screen, looking stretched. People could even download different screen savers if they got tired of the marquee, or bubbles appearing on their screen. Next, there was the option to change the look of their icons, however, this became something that only experienced computer users knew how to do. As time progressed, software for Windows expanded, allowing more options in personalization categories, until, today, Windows 7, most recent operating system of PCs, provided computer owners with the technological capability of downloading gadgets. This was something that was first seen on cell phones. Websites would allow visitors the option to download a special icon on to their phone. With one click of that icon, people would automatically be redirected to that associated website. This was the starting concept for gadgets, but took a different twist.
Windows 7 gadgets was a first of a kind, one that people accepted with open arms and excitement. Gadgets allowed computer users the ability to gain and access information to things that they found pertinent to their lives. Whether it was fun or serious, Windows 7 gadgets allowed people a wide range of freedom to download whatever they wanted, and the gadget itself would fit perfectly on their computer screen without ever getting in the way. Ranging from some of the most common items, such as news and headlines, weather, computer battery life, clocks, schedules and calendars, Internet search bars, games, pictures, television, and so much more. One of the things that people begin to understand about Windows 7 gadgets is that people are not limited to the ones that they already have installed on their computer.
